Hanover Girls Top Portsmouth
Durham, n.h. — Dan O’Rourke has been preaching defense to his Hanover High girls basketball team throughout the early going. On Wednesday at the Oyster River Holiday Tournament, the words were turned into action.
Holding Portsmouth’s top two scorers without a point in the second half, Hanover cruised away for a 45-32 victory, raising its record to 2-3.
“We played really well,” O’Rourke said. “We have been focusing on defense and it really showed.
“Eileen Daley had a great game stopping their top scorer.”
Hanover jumped ahead in the first quarter, fueled by Erica Hinck’s eight points off the bench. But trouble finding the basket in the second and third quarters found the Marauders holding onto a slim 26-23 margin heading into the final stanza.
That’s when the defense stepped up again and the front line of Holly Schlosser (10 rebounds), Safiya Walker, Liesel Robbins and Cathleen Beliveau took control of the boards. Molly Cornell led all scorers with nine points.
Hanover takes on St. Thomas tonight at 7.
