BRADFORD, Vt. — A 6-mile stretch of Interstate 91 South between Bradford, Vt., and Fairlee will close to traffic for an extended period beginning Wednesday.

All southbound drivers will be diverted to Route 5 at Exit 15 in Bradford, according to a Monday news release from the Vermont Agency of Transportation.

The closure has been anticipated since February when a rock slide temporarily closed the southbound lanes. Inspections revealed the need for extensive repair and stabilization work on the ledge that rises above the roadway at an area known as the Palisades.

A reopening date is not yet known, according to the VTrans release. The project may extend through the summer, project manager Bruce Martin said in an interview earlier this month.

To accommodate the additional traffic, a temporary traffic light has been installed at the intersection of Route 5 and Bridge Street in Fairlee.

Interstate 91 North will remain open to all traffic.
