Mariners, Orioles Make a Swap of Outfielders

New York — Trying to make the postseason for the second straight year, the Baltimore Orioles acquired outfielder Michael Morse from the Seattle Mariners on Friday to provide a right-handed boost to a lineup focused around lefty slugger Chris Davis.

The Orioles sent outfield prospect Xavier Avery to Seattle in a waiver trade. The Orioles also had won a waiver claim on Minnesota’s Josh Willingham, but the teams couldn’t work out a deal before Friday’s noon deadline.

Morse was in Houston with the Mariners, and Baltimore expects him to arrive in New York today or Sunday — the final two games of a weekend series against the Yankees.

Morse provides flexibility in the field, where he can play the corner outfield spots and first base, should Davis need a day off. He will also serve as the designated hitter.

Dodgers Add Pitcher

Los Angeles — Edinson Volquez signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Volquez was the Padres’ opening day starter this season for the second straight year. He went 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts before getting released Tuesday, two days after the club designated him for assignment.

The 30-year-old Volquez, an All-Star in 2008 with Cincinnati, is 53-50 with a 4.77 ERA in the majors. He has pitched for the Padres, Rangers and Reds.

Long Ride for Rays

Oakland, Calif. — Tampa Bay starter David Price is certainly regretting his choice to take a taxi to the Oakland Coliseum on Friday.

With the Bay Bridge closed all weekend, the alternate route ran him a whopping $202 — and he posted live updates of his frustrating adventure on Twitter during the long journey. Manager Joe Maddon took the team bus, leaving at 2 p.m. and arriving at the ballpark at 3:45. But Maddon had bargained on a 1-hour trip and left his headphones behind. While he had a fully charged cellphone and iPad, he opted to use the time planning a cross-country offseason RV trip.

Maddon plans to ride BART public transit before tonight’s game.

Price’s plan? “Don’t worry I have a helicopter rented for tomorrow!!” he tweeted.
