Donna Clara Somerville Hoyt

Lebanon, N.H. — Donna Clara Somerville Hoyt passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. Born in Norwich, Vt. on February 25, 1932, Donna was the daughter of Frank Goddell Somerville and Florence Ward Somerville. Donna grew up in Norwich and graduated from Hanover High School in 1949. She attended Lyndon Teachers College before marrying Amos Derby Hoyt in 1950. Donna and Amos lived in Florida while Amos served in the Navy, after which they lived in Keene, N.H. During the 1960s and1970s, Donna and Amos raised their four children in the Upper Valley, living in Hanover, Hanover Center, and Enfield, N.H.

Donna was enormously proud of her family and made them her first priority. She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young, and later worked 14 years as a typesetter for Roger Burt Printing and Hanover Graphics. She also worked for the Upper Valley Senior Center as an assistant to the Adult Day Care Program. She was a member and on the Board of Directors of the Enfield Community Development Committee. She was also a long time member of the Upper Valley Arthritis Support Group and CCBA aqua fitness group. Friends and family will long remember Donna as a courageous, resilient woman with a positive attitude, who faced great physical challenges brought on by rheumatoid arthritis that commenced when she was in her twenties. Despite her afflictions, Donna always made people feel welcome and showed compassion for others.

Donna will also be remembered for her wonderful dinner rolls, homemade bread, Pottsfield relish, stuffed cabbage rolls, wall papering talent, never failing remembrance of birthdays and anniversaries, and ability to maintain independence longer than most could have in her situation.

Donna was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, John Somerville and Sherman Somerville. She is survived by her brother, Dale Somerville and his wife, Marlene of Victory, Vt. She is also survived by Amos and their four children and their families, including Jane and Steve Plumley of Enfield; Pamela and Timothy Denison of Epsom, N.H.; James Hoyt of Lebanon; and Ellen and Lloyd Hackeman of Enfield; 9 grandchildren, their spouses; and many nieces and nephews.
