William H. “Whitey” Rowell

Hartland, Vt. — William H. “Whitey” Rowell, 80, a longtime resident of Hartland, passed away Monday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2014, at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.

He was born June 8, 1933, in Rutland, Vt. the son of William H. and Lois (Brothy) Rowell. He received his schooling in Rutland. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge in 1955 he returned to Hartland. He married Janice Hunt in Windsor on July 27, 1956. He was employed at the telephone company and later for Herrick Artisan in Hartland. He was later employed by Miller Construction in Windsor. Whitey was most recently employed by the Vermont Department of Corrections as a correctional officer at the Southeast Correctional Facility in Windsor for several years until his retirement. He was a proud and life member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Rowell was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed snowmobiling and hiking. He was especially fond of spending time with his family and English Setters, Remi and Ima. He was a man known to help anyone in need.

He was predeceased by his parents and one sister, Barbara Rowell.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Rowell; and one son, Thomas “Fruity” Rowell and his partner, Joy Michalenoick, all of Hartland; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 18 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ken White, Pastor of the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor, officiating. Committal services with military honors will be held in the spring in the Hartland Village Cemetery.
