Quechee Motorcycle Crash Injures Two

Quechee — A motorcycle accident on Route 4 in Quechee on Sunday left two people injured — one critically — and forced the closure of Route 4 for nearly an hour, Hartford Police said.

Sergeant Karl Ebbighausen said his department and the town’s fire department responded to the scene of the accident at the intersection of Route 4 and Severance Drive at 2:34 p.m. Ebbighausen said the two victims, a man and a woman from Canada, were en route to Quechee for camping. They were driving in a line of three cars when the front car slowed abruptly, forcing the motorcycle to take evasive action which caused it to roll on its side.

When rescuers arrived, the motorcycle was facing the wrong direction in the west-bound lane, said Ebbighausen. The woman was in the road and the man had rolled down the embankment. Both were wearing helmets, he said.

The female victim was in critical condition and unresponsive when the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team helicopter carried her to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Ebbighausen said.

The male victim was responsive and appeared to be in stable condition at the scene, but was “still banged up pretty bad,” said Ebbighausen. He was transported by ambulance to DHMC for treatment.

Police are withholding the victims’ names until family members have been notified. Ebbighausen said it did not appear that speed was a factor in the accident, but that driver inattention may have been. The investigation is ongoing. The Norwich Police Department assisted Hartford in responding to other calls while Hartford responders were managing the scene of the accident.
