College Student Indicted on Rape Charges
Dartmouth Man Faces 7 Counts Of Aggravated Sexual Assault
North Haverhill — A Dartmouth College student has been indicted on seven counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault for allegedly raping a female student inside her dorm room.
A Grafton Superior Court grand jury indicted Parker Gilbert, 20, of London, this month. Gilbert allegedly entered the female’s unlocked room on May 2.
Gilbert is being represented by George Ostler, of Norwich and Cathy Green, of Manchester, N.H., Green’s office released a statement that said Gilbert plans to plead not guilty to the charges.
“He has great faith in our justice system and looks forward to being completely exonerated,” Green’s office said in a statement.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but a tool for prosecutors to continue with criminal cases. The different counts addressed in the indictments say the victim was “physically helpless to resist” because she was sleeping, did not have adequate time to flee or resist and “indicated by speech or conduct” that she did not consent.
One count of aggravated sexual assault carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Gilbert has been listed as a member of Dartmouth’s club rugby team and is a member of the Class of 2016. Gilbert is not currently enrolled for the summer session, college spokesperson Justin Anderson said, but he said he could not comment on whether Gilbert will be enrolled in classes in the fall.
Gilbert posted $75,000 bail in May, and at the time, Hanover Police Capt. Frank Moran said Gilbert was no longer on campus. Moran could not be reached for comment on Monday.
Gilbert was ordered to surrender his British passport before being released on bail, according to court documents. Gilbert is restricted from traveling outside of New Hampshire, except for medical and counseling appointments in Vermont and Massachusetts. He is living in New London, according to court documents.
The 19-year-old female student filed complaints with authorities. As a general practice, the Valley News does not identify victims of alleged sex crimes.
Gilbert is scheduled to be arraigned in Grafton Superior Court at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 5.
Also this month, the grand jury indicted Donald Hamel, 72, of Lebanon, who has been charged with raping three young girls during the past several years.
He was indicted on nine counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault.
Hamel was originally arrested in May and was held on $100,000 cash bail.
Court documents show that the alleged victims are now about 13, 12 and 7 years old and the alleged acts ran from 2007 to 2013.
Hamel previously had no criminal record and lived at Riverdale Parkway in Lebanon before an investigation began in May.
