Maple Syrup Lost in Thetford Sugarhouse Fire
Thetford — No one was injured in a fire that destroyed a sugarhouse on Gove Hill Road early yesterday morning.
“When the homeowner noticed it, it was already fully involved, and the roof had already collapsed in, unfortunately,” said Mariah Whitcomb, Thetford Fire Department deputy chief.
The blaze was reported at about 2 a.m. and quickly brought under control, Whitcomb said.
After noticing the fire, the homeowner moved his truck, which was parked about 15 feet from the structure. The vehicle and house, about 50 feet away from the sugarhouse, were unharmed, Whitcomb said. Unfortunately, however, he lost “a lot of maple syrup.”
The cause of the fire is “undetermined at this point,” she said. The homeowner was not boiling sap when the fire started.
Norwich and Strafford fire departments also responded to the call, and Bradford Fire Department supplied an air trailer. Lyme Fire Department provided station coverage, and Upper Valley Ambulance, medical coverage.
