Nugget Screens Locally Shot Thriller
An independent thriller from two Hanover High School graduates has been generating buzz on the film festival circuit, and this week Brief Reunion will finally be screened in the region where it was filmed.
Written and directed by Lyme native John Daschbach and produced by his classmate and Norwich resident Ben Silberfarb, Brief Reunion has a six-day run at the Nugget Theater in Hanover, starting tonight. Daschbach and Silberfarb will be on hand for a question-and-answer session following tonight and Saturday night’s screenings, which start at 6:40. The Saturday night showing will also be attended by Joel de la Fuente, one of the stars, and the film will remain at the Nugget through Wednesday night.
Shot in the summer of 2010 at locations in Hanover and Lyme, Brief Reunion explores the repercussions of two old acquaintances reconnecting on Facebook. Enjoying a well-to-do, New England country lifestyle, Aaron (de la Fuente) is rediscovered by Teddy, a college classmate who seems bent on revealing elements of the past that Aaron would prefer not see the light of day. Brief Reunion had its debut at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and has since made the rounds on the festival circuit, including a screening at the the Gotham Screen International Film Festival in New York City, where it won the Audience Choice Award. Reviews have been mixed: while praising Scott Shepherd’s performance, New York Times reviewer Stephen Holden lamented that “the juicy dramatic possibilities of buried secrets and lies and cybertrickery are left unexplored.”
The win at the Gotham festival, however, landed Brief Reunion a distribution deal, and it opened last month in theaters in New York and Los Angeles. “It’s starting on kind of a national and international run right now,” Silberfarb said. “It’s pretty exciting. What actually is the most exciting thing is to have it come to our local movie theater. John was a projectionist there growing up in high school. It’s nice to come full circle.”
