North Hartland, Vt. — Edna E. Coutermarsh, 90, died Saturday night, March 17, 2016 at home in North Hartland with her family by her side.
She was born May 10, 1926 in Tunbridge, Vt. a daughter of Bernard “Bun” and Doris (White) Brown. Edna was raised by her greataunt and uncle, Mae and Ira Luce in Tunbridge and later graduated from South Royalton High School. She lived in Springfield, Mass. during World War II, working to support the war effort.
She was married to Robert M. Coutermarsh Sept. 26, 1945 in Hartford, Vt. where she worked for the water department for a time before starting a family. In 1952 they purchased the store in North Hartland with Robert’s brother, and the families operated it for many years as the Coutermarsh Brothers Store.
After their children were grown, Edna began work at McGee Greydon Freeman in White River Jct., later at KRoss in Lebanon, NH and then at Northern Nurseries on the North Hartland Rd. Edna enjoyed sewing in her younger years and more recently enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. She was a past member of the North Hartland Home Dem Club and taught sewing for the North Hartland 4H Club.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 1990 and leaves two children, Bonnie Downs of White River Jct. and Barry Coutermarsh and his wife Donna also of White River Jct.; two grandchildren Tammie D. Stammers and her husband Scot of North Hartland and Jason R. Coutermarsh and his wife Katie of Westford, Mass.; three greatgrandchildren, Kristina Marie, Jared Scot and Benjamin Robert as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held later in the spring in the Spring Road Cemetery in Tunbridge, Vt. Condolences to Edna’s family may be made in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com.
