Doral, Fla. — Tiger Woods is hitting his stride on a march to the Masters.

Woods had full control of his game yesterday and never let anyone get closer than three shots until he had locked up his 17th World Golf Championship title. With a conservative bogey that didn’t matter on the final hole, he closed with a 1-under 71 to win the Cadillac Championship.

For the first time in five years, Woods has two wins before the Masters.

It was one year ago at Doral that Woods withdrew after 11 holes in the final round because of tightness in his left Achilles tendon, creating uncertainty about his health and whether he could ever get his game back.

False alarm.

Woods has won five times in the last year, the most of anyone in the world, and he can return to No. 1 with a win at Bay Hill in two weeks.

He won by two shots over Steve Stricker, who might want to claim a share of this trophy.

Stricker spent 45 minutes on the putting green with Woods on the eve of the tournament, helping him with his posture over putts. Woods made 27 birdies this week, one short of his personal best on the PGA Tour.

Stricker, playing a part-time schedule, picked up his second runner-up finish in just three starts. He closed with a 68, and had no regrets about offering Woods some help.

The Masters is a month away, and Woods is sure to be the favorite.

Rory McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the world, showed signs of recovering from his rough start to the season. He had a 65 and tied for eighth.

Kenseth Wins on Birthday

Las Vegas — Matt Kenseth won on his 41st birthday for his new Joe Gibbs Racing team, barely holding off Kasey Kahne for his third victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway yesterday.

Kenseth earned his 25th career victory in just his third start in the JGR Toyota after leaving Roush Fenway Racing in the offseason. He took the lead away from Kahne out of a late restart and fended off Kahne’s Chevrolet over the final laps, adding another trophy to his Las Vegas victories in 2003 and 2004.

Pole sitter Brad Keselowski finished third, with hometown driver Kyle Busch in fourth and Carl Edwards fifth. Jimmie Johnson, the overall points leader, was sixth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. seventh.

Defending Vegas champion Tony Stewart finished 11th, while Denny Hamlin was 15th.

Kenseth is just the third NASCAR driver to win on his birthday, joining Cale Yarborough — who did it twice — and Busch. His win was the 50th for Toyota in Sprint Cup Series competition.

Ex-Champ Assumes Lead

Anchorage, Alaska — A former winner of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race took the lead early yesterday and held onto it as he pressed forward along the Bering Sea coastline. Another musher was just 15 minutes behind.

With less than 250 miles to the finish line, Mitch Seavey was the first musher to leave Unalakleet, where he pulled into town earlier at 10:13 a.m. and was able to rest his team for about five hours. Aaron Burmeister pulled into the checkpoint just 15 minutes after Seavey and was the same musher who followed him out.

The mushers arrived at the checkpoint after traveling from Kaltag, the last stop on the frozen Yukon River.

Murray Advances in Calif.

Indian Wells, Calif. — Andy Murray earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Evgeny Donskoy in a second-round match at the BNP Paribas Open yesterday.

Murray, the No. 3 seed at the $10 million event, had lost his opening match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in each of the past two years.

Women’s No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova followed Murray onto Stadium Court and advanced to the fourth round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.

Also, Mardy Fish of the United States earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Bobby Reynolds.

Chelsea Rallies in FA Cup

London — Eden Hazard and Ramires scored second-half goals as defending Chelsea rallied for a 2-2 tie at Manchester United and forced a replay to determine which team will play Manchester City in the semifinals.

Coming off Champions League elimination against Real Madrid on Tuesday, Manchester United built a 2-0 lead on goals by Javier Hernandez in the fifth minute and Wayne Rooney in the 11th. Hazard began the comeback when he scored in the 59th minute, and Ramires tied it nine minutes later.

“The emotions and the intensity of Tuesday night took their toll on some of the players,” United manager Alex Ferguson said.

Millwall was held to a 0-0 tie by visiting Blackburn in an all-second tier matchup, and they will have a replay to decide who faces Wigan. The semifinals are April 13 and 14.

In the Premier League, third-place Tottenham (16-7-6) wasted a second-half lead in a 3-2 loss at Liverpool, wasting a chance to extend its two-point lead over Chelsea (15-6-7). Newcastle moved nine points above the relegation zone with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at home over Stoke.

At Anfield, Luis Suarez put Liverpool ahead in the 21st with his 50th goal for the club, but Jan Vertonghen scored in the 45th and 53rd minutes, set up both times by Gareth Bale.

Stewart Downing tied the score in the 66th and Steven Gerrard converted a penalty kick in the 82nd after Benoit Assou-Ekotto fouled Suarez. Liverpool (12-8-9) moved into sixth place with its third straight win.

At St. James’ Park, Papiss Cisse scored in second-half stoppage time for Newcastle. Stoke went ahead on Jonathan Walters’ penalty kick in the 67th, but Yohan Cabaye tied the score five minutes later.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to give Real Madrid a 2-1 win at Celta Vigo.

Ronaldo scored from a loose ball in the 61st minute. After Iago Aspas tied the score against the run of play two minutes later, Ronaldo converted a penalty kick in the 72nd following a foul on Kaka.

Ronaldo has 26 league goals this season, second only to Lionel Messi’s 40 for Barcelona.

Barcelona (23-2-2) leads by 14 points over second-place Atletico Madrid (18-5-3), which hosted Real Sociedad in a late game, and by 16 points over Real Madrid (17-5-4).

ROME (AP) — Juventus opened a nine-point lead in the Italian league with 10 games left, beating visiting Catania 1-0 while second-place Napoli lost 2-0 at Chievo Verona.

Emanuele Giaccherini scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time for Juventus following a cross from Paul Pogba, the 19-year-old French forward let go by Manchester United after last season.

In Verona, Chievo got goals from Boukary Drame in the 12th minute and Cyril Thereau in the 43rd. A penalty kick by Napoli’s Edinson Cavani was saved by goalkeeper Christian Puggioni in the 13th.

Juventus (19-4-5) has 62 points to 53 for Napoli (15-5-8), which is two points ahead of third-place AC Milan (15-7-6).

In late games, Inter Milan hosted Bologna and Fiorentina was at Lazio.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Eintracht Frankfurt failed to score for a fifth straight match, tying 0-0 at Hannover and dropping into fifth place in the Bundesliga.

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — Hibernian was denied a goal when a free kick went over the line but was not credited in an Edinburgh derby against Hearts that ended 0-0.

Leigh Griffiths’ shot went off the underside of the crossbar and the ball bounced well over the line.

The incident came a week after soccer’s rule-makers met in Edinburgh and approved regulations for the global rollout of technology to rule on disputed goal-line incidents.

FIFA will give referees high tech aids at the Confederations’ Cup in Brazil in June and the 2014 World Cup, while the English Premier League will introduce technology next season.

The Scottish Football Association, which has championed goal-line technology, says it will have to wait for costs of the systems to come down. Four systems have been licensed by FIFA, with the cheapest costing at least $100,000 to install in a stadium.
