Letter: A Big Loss and a Big Gain

To the Editor:

The Vermont Legislature will face complex and vexing issues when it convenes in early January. Among the new faces seeking solutions, Kathy Hoyt will join me in representing Sharon, Strafford, Thetford and Norwich. As many who have followed her career know, she is likely the most experienced rookie to ever enter the House chamber.

Hoyt’s qualifications notwithstanding, the Legislature will deeply miss former Rep. Margaret Cheney, who has left the House to take a seat on the Public Service Board. It is no surprise that Gov. Shumlin chose Cheney for this important post. She knows energy and the challenges facing Vermonters who depend on it. She is a remarkably quick study, dedicated, fastidious about detail and calm under pressure. Above all, she is a woman of integrity.

We will miss her, but look forward to the product of her work on the Public Service Board. We wish her well.

Rep. Jim Masland, D
