Letter: Local Farmland Conservation
To the Editor:
It is wonderful news that the Vermont Land Trust is helping the owners of Crossroads Farm and residents of Thetford raise funds to ensure that this popular and productive farm will continue (“Preserving a Post Mills Farm,” Aug. 1). We’re especially pleased because the Upper Valley Land Trust completed a project to conserve the adjacent town-owned Taylor Floodplain Preserve at the end of July. Local farms are important to the economy and to the health and the environment of the Upper Valley. The Upper Valley Land Trust has conserved land that supports our region’s thriving fruit and vegetable farms, including Sunrise Farm in Hartford, Lyme Farm Fresh, Plainfield Cider Orchard and Killdeer Farm (and Farrell Farm) in Norwich. Our current agricultural projects include productive lands in Cornish, Hartland, Plainfield and Piermont. The conservation of Crossroads Farm is consistent with, and builds upon, these ongoing community-based efforts. We are thrilled that this campaign is under way in Thetford. We urge Upper Valley residents to support this exciting project and other farmland conservation initiatives throughout the region.
President, Upper Valley Land Trust
