Letter: A Tale of Two Senators

To the Editor:

Prior to the recent U.S. Senate vote to allow debate on steps to prevent gun violence, I contacted the offices of Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte to express my support for common-sense measures, including treating Internet gun sales the same way as purchases from local gun dealers. Shaheen responded thoughtfully and quickly, noting that “we must put in place a balanced and comprehensive approach to firearm safety that includes improving access to mental health services and better enforcement of our current laws while protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens.” She expressed support for expanded background checks for gun-show and Internet sales while providing exemptions for transfers between family, friends and coworkers.

Ayotte didn’t bother to respond to my message and, of course, voted against closing the gun show/Internet loophole. It’s a long time until Ayotte stands for re-election in 2016, but I hope that residents of the Upper Valley will remember her rejection of common-sense measures for preventing gun violence.
