Florence Virginia Greaves Jones

North Haverhill, N.H. — Florence Virginia Greaves Jones, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at the Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H.

Born on June 2, 1916, at Devil’s Lake, Fort Totten, N.D., Florence “Virgie” was the daughter of Alvah and Florence (Hunter) Greaves. Virgie lived in homes in Minneapolis, Philadelphia and upstate New York. She graduated from Clinton High School in New York and Utica College of Nursing, where she achieved the highest state board grade in her class and was awarded a scholarship to Columbia University to continue her nursing education. She was employed as a Registered Nurse at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in N.Y.C. and was a Second Lieutenant during WWII, working as an Army nurse at a stateside hospital. She married Doran Arthur Jones in 1946, and moved to New Hampshire where she continued her nursing career.

Virgie and Doran had three children. Virgie was predeceased by her son, Doran Arthur Jones, Jr.; her husband; her sister, Dorothy Wade; and her brother, Donald Greaves. She is survived by daughters, Susan Jane Jones Goodale and Diana Hunter Jones; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, great nieces and nephews, and her beloved pets. Virgie was kind, gentle, tolerant, funny, genuine, compassionate and giving. She loved children, animals, reading, antiquing, movies, music, dancing, the ocean, flowers and all things beautiful.

Per Virgie’s request, there will be no funeral or calling hours. Donations may be made to the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
