Karen Jean Ray Custer
Meriden, N.H. — Karen Jean Ray Custer, 61, of Camp Road, passed away July 5, 2013, at the Woodlawn Care Center in Newport, N.H., where she had been a resident for the past two years.
Karen was born in Altoona, Pa., on Nov. 21, 1951, daughter of the late Charles L. and Jean (Renn) Ray. She was raised and educated in Granby, Conn., graduating from Granby High School in the Class of 1969. She spent her college years at the University of New Hampshire where she earned her BA and went on to teach at three different independent schools. She married John Custer on June 13, 1981, and they brought up their family in Connecticut before moving to Meriden in 1994. Karen spent ten years as a member of the Math Department at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, where she also served as a coach and as a residential dorm parent. She spent her summers on Islesboro, Maine, an island in Penobscot Bay, and she enjoyed sailing off the coast. Karen enjoyed gardening, singing and taking care of her animals and was a member of the Congregational Church in Granby, Conn. and later in Meriden. She was deeply loved will be dearly missed.
Karen is survived by her husband of 32 years, John, of Meriden, her sons: Nathaniel, of Washington, D.C., Nicholas of Boston, Mass.; a brother: Charles D. Ray and his wife, Laura, of W. Granby, Conn.; and several cousins and nephews.
A private family service will take place in Maine on Aug. 6. A memorial service in Meriden is tentatively planned for October.
