J. Peter Gratiot

Pomfret, Vt— J. Peter Gratiot, 92, died on July 4, 2013 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Born on February 5, 1921 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Arthur Lynn and Marjorie (Streeter) Gratiot, Peter acquired his formal education from the St. Louis Country Day School, the Berkshire School in Mass., and Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and a Masters degree in Economics. Peter served in the US Navy during World War II.

In 1954 Peter and his family moved to Vermont and he opened the Gratiot Engineering Co. that he operated in the village of Woodstock for over 40 years. His professional accomplishments were many, including the design of the Killington Gondola Wind Screen that received a national award from the Consulting Engineers Council. Peter was instrumental in the design and development of many ski areas including, Stratton Mountain, Bromley Mountain, and Camelback in Pa.

Peter’s interests were focused on Education, Pomfret, and Vermont. He served as a Pomfret Town Selectman, was concerned with environmental and historic preservation in Pomfret, and Vermont, and spent a great deal of time researching and working for improvements in State Aid for Education. He served on the boards of the National and State Consulting Engineers Council, as well as on a number of committees of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), where he helped develop many of the building and fire codes that are still in use today. Peter enjoyed creativity and a good challenge. He built his own computer before modern PCs were available for purchase, and he developed many software programs he used in his business. He also loved to fly and had a private pilot’s license for many years.

Peter is survived by his wife Daphne (Pike) Gratiot of Pomfret, his four children; John Gratiot and wife Kathy Ford of Pomfret, Alex Gratiot of Pomfret, Nina Barr and husband Gordon of Frisco, Texas, and Dan Gratiot and wife Arshia of London, England, as well as his 3 grandchildren, Michelle and Christine Barr and Reya Gratiot.

A celebration of Peter’s life is being planned for a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pomfret Emergency Services or the Pomfret Historical Society, South Pomfret, VT 05067
