Gordon E. Rockwood

Oro Valley, Ariz. — Gordon E. Rockwood, 83, of 241 West Appalachian Street died at home on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014. He was born in Hartland, Vt., on July 28, 1930, the son of Floyd and Julia (Bowers) Rockwood.

He attended one-room elementary schools in Hartland and graduated from Windsor High School in 1948. Following service with the U.S. Air Force in Greenland 1948-52, he lived in Hartland and worked with builders Rockwood and Young Inc. until starting work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at North Hartland Dam. He later moved to Corps of Engineers positions in Arizona and California before retiring because of a work-related disability and lived in Arizona in Prescott, Chino Valley, Tucson, Show Low and Oro Valley. In retirement he became known by neighbors and friends as “the guy who could build or fix anything.”

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Russell Rockwood; a son, Jeff in Tucson; and a daughter, Cindy Markus, with four children and nine grandchildren, in northern California. He is also survived by his older brother, Walter Rockwood in Chelsea, Vt., whose four children provide nine nieces and nephews. A sister, Greta Somerville, Norwich, Vt., predeceased him in 1984.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will be in the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in May. Memorial donations may be made in Gordon’s name to Casa de la Luz Hospice, 7740 North Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85704 or to American Cancer Society, 1636 North Swan Road, Suite 151, Tucson, AZ 85712.
