Letter: The Promise of Wind Energy
To the Editor:
I understand that America cannot simply immediately drop oil as an energy source and turn strictly to renewables. I do know, however, that instead of creating more oil infrastructure, it is imperative that we begin divesting from oil and start using clean energy sources when the opportunities present themselves. Investing in wind off the Northeast coast would be an effective step in the right direction. Unfortunately, the federal policies necessary to ensure its success are at risk of expiring unless Congress acts now.
Offshore wind is clean, unlimited and free. It gives Americans more energy independence than oil does, as it is right in our backyard and not sold on the global market. Offshore wind has the potential to revamp the American manufacturing sector, and in doing so could create about 200,000 jobs in everything from assembly and transportation to operations and maintenance. The Northeast has been a leader for this country in supporting clean energy, and offshore wind offers a wealth of vastly untapped energy potential that would help our economy grow while protecting our environment.
Such a new and developing industry can only succeed if it is properly financed. This can come in the form of the Incentivizing Offshore Wind Power Act in the Senate. This act, which would allow for the long-term extension of an investment tax credit, would keep the industry financed and encourage investors, since it would enable quicker investment returns. The Incentivizing Offshore Wind Power Act would ensure long-term investment certainty and is vital in the establishment of the offshore wind industry.
Your voice is important. Please urge Sen. Jeanne Shaheen to support offshore wind by co-sponsoring the Incentivizing Offshore Wind Power Act. It is time we stop talking about advancement, and start doing.
