Police: Man Secretly Taped Teens in Sex

Lebanon — Police allege that a 53-year-old West Lebanon man secretly videotaped a teenager and her boyfriend having sex.

Thomas A. Barnes was arrested and charged on Tuesday with four counts of manufacturing child sexual abuse images, four counts of unlawful wiretapping and four counts of violation of privacy.

The Lebanon Police Department alleges Barnes placed a video camera in the victim’s bedroom closet to which he had access, without her knowledge. Around Dec. 21, the girl’s boyfriend discovered a tote bag inside the girl’s bedroom closet, containing the camera.

As a general practice, the Valley News does not identify victims of sex crimes.

Lebanon police executed a search warrant Dec. 27, and found that the video camera had been disposed of, but they discovered a computer that held four videos taken in the spring of 2013 of the victim and her boyfriend, according to the police affidavit.

The charges allege that Barnes “knowingly” created a video that showed a child engaging in sexual intercourse, “willfully” used an electronic device to intercept conversation between two people without their consent, and “knowingly and unlawfully” installed a concealed video camera in a bedroom of a juvenile without consent and for recording images.

In New Hampshire, creating or producing an image of a child engaged in sexually explicit conduct is a felony.

Barnes’ defense attorney, George Ostler, declined to comment.

Barnes’ bail was set at $10,000 cash only, which he posted, and was released.

His conditions of bail restrain Barnes from having any contact with the victim. He cannot leave New England or New York state.

Barnes has a probable cause hearing scheduled for March 3 in Lebanon District Court.
