Violette’s Supermarket Closing in Newport
Newport — Violette’s Supermarket, an independent grocery store that opened in a renovated space on Main Street a little more than a year ago, is closing its doors.
With everything being sold at 50 percent off, shoppers crowded the store Tuesday to scoop up bargains.
The sale is expected to continue for two more days before everything is gone.
Owner Dana Violette opened the 10,000 square foot store last August in the same location his father, Vern, operated the family grocery store years ago. Violette could not be reached Tuesday to comment on the reasons for the closing but one person working in the store said it was financial-related.
In an interview last year, Violette said he believed he could compete with the town’s chain supermarket, Shaw’s, by delivering strong personal service and responding to customer requests as well as being involved in the community.
