Bottom line: The 2013 Audi S5 Quattro coupe proves that compromise, carefully and thoughtfully worked out, can be a very good thing. This one gets a strong “buy” for people who have the money to afford it.

Ride, acceleration and handling: It gets superior marks in all three.

Head-turning quotient: Witness the beautiful face of well-considered compromise.

Body style/layout: The 2013 Audi S5 is a front-engine, all-wheel-drive two-door automobile available as a hard-top coupe and soft-top convertible (Cabriolet). There are two trim levels — Premium and Prestige.

Engine/transmissions: The new S5 comes with a standard 3-liter, 24-valve supercharged gasoline V-6 with variable valve timing. The engine is linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission. A seven-speed automatic transmission that also can be operated manually is available.

Capacities: Seats for four people. As in most coupes, cargo capacity is limited. We’re talking 12.4 cubic feet here. The fuel tank holds 16.9 gallons of gasoline. Premium grade is required.

Mileage: I averaged 24 miles per gallon in highway driving.

Safety: Standard equipment includes front and rear ventilated disc brakes; four-wheel anti-lock brake protection; emergency braking assistance; electronic brake-force distribution; electronic stability and traction control; and side and head air bags. Also available are blind-side monitoring and lane monitoring. Audi also offers a six-month Audi Connect emergency communications and infotainment service.

Price: The 2013 Audi S5 Quattro Coupe starts at $50,900, with a dealer’s invoice price of $47,338. Price as tested is $58,095 including $6,300 in options (onboard navigation with backup camera, Audi lane and blind-side assistance, and other items) and an $895 destination charge. Dealer’s price as tested is $54,093.
