Two Injured in Enfield Snowmobile Crash
Enfield — Two people were injured Tuesday night when a snowmobiler swerved to avoid a pedestrian and crashed into a tree on the Northern Rail Trail in Enfield, state Fish and Game officials said on Wednesday.
Lynn Little, of Enfield, was listed in satisfactory condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Wednesday evening. She was walking her dog on the rail trail when a snowmobile driven by Kevin Bailey, of Lebanon, approached her around 7:45 p.m.
Bailey was the lead rider in a convoy of three snowmobiles on the trail near the center of town when he swerved to avoid Little and her dog and his snowmobile struck a tree, Fish and Game Conservation Officer Tom Dakai said.
Bailey suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Dakai said. He was not transported to a hospital.
Dakai said the accident remains under investigation but it appears alcohol was a factor in the crash.
He said Bailey faces a charge of aggravated DWI, and is scheduled to appear in court at the end of April.
In a telephone interview Wednesday evening, Little said she heard the sound of a snowmobile while walking along the rail trail. Then, the next thing she remembers, she woke up in an ambulance, she said. Little said she has limited recollection of the incident.
Due to a concussion stemming from the incident, she anticipated spending a second night at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Little said she hopes to head home today.
In addition to the head injury, Little incurred what she termed, a “minor spinal fracture,” as well as soft tissue bruises on her left side.
“I’ll be OK eventually,” Little said from her hospital bed.
Little also expected her dog, who sustained a “nick” on the inside of one leg, to recover.
Attempts to reach Bailey were unsuccessful.
One intriguing factor in the crash is that based on the interviews with Little and Bailey, Dakai said it doesn’t appear Little was struck with the snowmobile.
“I find it hard to believe,” Dakai said. “We have a few more questions to ask.”
Investigators also believe the snowmobile struck Little’s dog.
The dog ran off after the incident, but Dakai said the it was found about four hours later.
