Letter: Insensitive Remarks at the White House

To the Editor:

Spokesman Jay Carney said at a recent White House press conference that if you would prefer not to go to an unrewarding job just to have access to health insurance — perhaps to dabble in the arts or to stay home with your children — the Affordable Care Act will relieve you of that burden. What went unsaid was that a lot of chumps will have to leave their children in the care of others and go to their own crappy jobs for the privilege of earning your insurance subsidy.

I’m left to wonder whether this astonishing display of insensitivity was a result of willful ignorance of the most basic laws of economics or of sheer stupidity. Someone once said that the only thing wrong with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money. The country seems to be divided between those of us who regard this as a truism and those who simply prefer that it not be so and thus feel justified in flouting it.
