Local Roundup: Nighthawks Drop Finale

Wednesday, August 02, 2017

Plymouth, Mass. — The Plymouth Pilgrims tagged Upper Valley Nighthawks starting pitcher Joe DeRosa for six runs and nine hits in the opening two innings en route to a 9-3 win at Forges Field on Tuesday night in the NECBL regular-season finale for both teams.

The contest had no bearing on the postseason. The Nighthawks (29-15) already owned the top seed in the Northern Division, while the Pilgrims (25-19) were assured the second seed in the Southern Division.

Fourteen Upper Valley batters managed just five hits against seven Plymouth pitchers. Anthony Godino (Wagner) homered and Cade Sorrells (Lipscomb) drove in a run for the Nighthawks, who will host the first game of their best-of-three division series against either Valley or Keene on Friday night at the Maxfield Sports Complex.

Sedlar Remains Atop NHWGA

Grantham — Nashua Country Club’s Chelsea Sedlar maintained and extended her lead on Tuesday during the second round of the New Hampshire Women’s Golf Association state amateur championship at Eastman Golf Links.

For the second straight day, the Sacred Heart University junior and defending NHWGA champion posted the low round of the day. Sedlar’s 5-over-par 75 leaves her at 11-over 151 through 36 holes.

After losing four shots to par over her first eight holes, Sedlar birdied the short, par-5 ninth for the second straight day to ignite a better back nine. Sedlar had seven pars against two bogeys over the back, and she enters today’s final round leading Canterbury Wood’s Beth Hamilton by four strokes.

Hamilton is at 78-77—155, while 16-time champion Dana Harrity, of Rye’s Abenaqui CC, remains in the hunt at 81-76—157. The threesome will be the final group off the first tee in today’s final round, starting at 9:40 a.m.

Derryfield’s Tara Watt (78-82—160), former Eastman golfer Lisanne Schmidt (83-78—161) and Keene’s Alice Manwaring (80-82—162) are well back but not completely out of contention. They’ll tee off as a trio at 9:30 a.m. today.
