WILDER — A 23-year-old Canaan man is facing drunken driving charges after he allegedly crashed his car while trying to give the finger to an Upper Valley police chief on Interstate 91 last week, according to a news release from Vermont State Police.

Jordan Deford was charged with driving under the influence following the June 2 crash on Interstate 91 by Exit 12 in Wilder.

The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. when Deford passed Windsor Police Chief Jennifer Frank, who also was driving southbound on the interstate, and lifted a hand to make a “gesture with his middle finger,” at her, the release said.

As he did, Deford lost control of the 2014 Chrysler sedan he was driving and went off the road into the grassy median, hitting the curbing on the Bugbee Street overpass, the release said. The front end of Deford’s car was damaged, and it had to be towed from the median.

Hartford police who arrived at the scene and, during a discussion with Deford and Frank, reportedly saw signs that Deford was impaired. A Hartford officer conducted a breath test, which showed that Deford’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit, according to Hartford Interim Police Chief Brad Vail.

Deford, who was released following the crash, is due in Windsor Superior Court on June 22 on the driving under the influence charge. Vermont State Police are investigating the crash.

Messages left for Deford on Thursday were not returned. Frank, whose husband, Sam Frank, is the police chief in Canaan, could not immediately be reached for comment.
