Hartford Boys Drop Tennis Opener
White River Junction — For the lack of two players, the Hartford High boys tennis team came up a match short in a season-opening 4-3 loss to Bellows Falls at Hartford High School on Monday.
Tied 3-3 through five singles matches and one doubles affair, the Hurricanes (0-1) forfeited second doubles for not having anyone to fill the void. But Hartford didn’t lack for success, with Loriston Fennell, Andrew Files and George Spaulding putting the Canes in position for a win by taking their respective singles matches.
Fennell gained the Canes’ first point with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Tim Guyon at No. 2. Files followed with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 defeat of Connor Neathawk at No. 3, and Spearing boosted Hartford’s possibilities to topping Gus Slater-Dixon at No. 5, 7-6, 7-6.
Hartford plays its first match on the road with a trip to Rutland on Thursday.

Robbie Anthony, Zack Fowler and Jack Bruan added second-half tries, and Hughes — back with Dartmouth after touring with the USA Eagles sevens over the winter — went 5-for-7 on conversions to pace the rout.
