Proudly Wearing Dad’s Glad Rags
The smiling gentleman above is 2013 Dartmouth graduate Andrew Jankowski, a former member of the Big Green golf team and the son of former Dartmouth hockey goaltender Jim Jankowski.
That’s Jim’s old jersey Andrew is wearing. I snapped the shot last Saturday down at Harvard, where Andrew was watching the women’s soccer team lose to the Crimson.
I first encountered Andrew and his historic sweater in the Burham Field men’s room. I’m sure he was thrilled to have a stranger approach him at a urinal and start chattering away about how cool the jersey was, but he handled it with good humor.
Saturday, Andrew Jankowksi told me he pinched the jersey from a closet in his family’s Elkins, N.H., house sometime during his teenage years. It’s in remarkably good condition for such an old piece, and features a nameplate Velcroed to the back shoulders. I guess that was cutting-edge technology for the time.
Jim Jankowski, now president of a company called Dartex Software, shared goaltending duties with current Dartmouth men’s hockey coach Bob Gaudet from 1977-81. The Big Green reached the NCAA semifinals during their sophomore and junior seasons.
