Humble, Texas — Sergio Garcia surged to the top of the leaderboard by shooting a 7-under-par 65 in the second round of the Houston Open on Friday.

The Spaniard’s overall score of 12-under 132 matches the 36-hole low at the 7,441-yard Golf Club of Houston, and he’s one shot ahead of Matt Kuchar.

Garcia, opening on the back nine, climbed the leaderboard with a birdie-eagle-birdie stretch on his front nine. His eagle on No. 13 came after sticking his 282-yard second shot to 5 feet.

First-round co-leader Bill Haas followed his opening 65 with a 2-over 74 in gusty conditions. The other first-round leader, Charley Hoffman, fell to 3 under overall.

Phil Mickelson shot a 2-under 70 and is 6 under overall, six shots back of Garcia.

After a bogey-free opening round on Thursday, Mickelson — still recovering from last week’s muscle pull that forced his withdrawal from the Texas Open — overcame a pair of bogeys on Friday with four birdies.

The five-time major winner, who won the Houston Open in 2011, had back-to-back birdies to reach 6 under and is one of 11 golfers within six shots of Garcia.

After settling into a tie for second place with a first-round 66, Woodstock, Vt., native Keegan Bradley ballooned to a 77 in the second round. He’s 11 shots behind Garcia.

Thompson, Pak in Front At Kraft Nabisco

Rancho Mirage, Calif. — Lexi Thompson found a putting touch to match her power game Friday in the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

The 19-year-old Thompson, already a three-time winner on the LPGA Tour, shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 at Mission Hills for a share of the second-round lead with Se Ri Pak.

Thompson birdied eight of the last 13 holes and had only 25 putts after taking 35 in a first-round 73. Pak had a 70 to match Thompson at 7-under 137 in the first major championship of the year.

Michelle Wie was a stroke back after a 71.

First-round leader Shanshan Feng bogeyed the final two holes for a 73 to drop into a tie for fourth with Cristie Kerr at 5 under. Kerr had a 70.

Family Circle Top Seeds Ousted

Charleston, s.c. — It proved tough to be a top seed at the Family Circle Cup this week.

No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic and No. 3 seed Sara Errani were both upset Friday in the quarterfinals, leaving sixth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard as the lone top-10 seed left in the semifinals.

Jankovic fell to Bouchard 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to start the round of eight before 17-year-old qualifier Belinda Bencic pulled off an even bigger shocker by eliminating Errani, a runner-up at the French Open in 2012.

Bencic, who had to win twice last weekend simply to make the field, took over in the final two sets for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over the 26-year-old Italian. Bencic hadn’t made it past the second round in two previous WTA events this year and wasn’t expecting to advance to her first tour semifinals

Bencic will face either 12th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova or Jana Cepelova, who defeated world No. 1 Serena Williams on Tuesday night to start off a week of surprises at the Family Circle.

Saints to Sign Bailey

New Orleans — Champ Bailey will get to chase a Pro Bowl record and another Super Bowl appearance with the New Orleans Saints.

The veteran cornerback agreed to a two-year contract with the Saints on Friday, with a maximum value that approaches $7 million, including guaranteed money and a signing bonus in the first year.

The 35-year-old Bailey played the last 10 seasons with Denver after spending his first five in the NFL with Washington. A shutdown cornerback for much of his career, Bailey has made three All-Pro teams and been selected to 12 Pro Bowls. He trails only Hall of Fame end Reggie White (13) among defensive players in NFL history in Pro Bowls.

Bailey’s 52 interceptions are the most among active players, as are his 204 passes defensed. He made the league’s All-Decade team for 2000-09.

“We are excited to be able to add a future Hall of Fame player with the addition of Champ Bailey,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. “His career accomplishments mirror that of his high character, and he’s a very prideful and competitive player who we believe will add to our defense.”

Bailey missed 11 games because of a left foot sprain originally suffered in the 2013 preseason, which wound up being a Lisfranc injury, one of the most painful for an athlete.

He returned late in the season to help the Broncos advance to the Super Bowl, where they were routed by Seattle.

His coverage skills clearly are not what they were in his prime, but he will add leadership and savvy to the Saints’ secondary that is undergoing a transformation following the release of strong safety Roman Harper and the loss of free safety Malcolm Jenkins, who signed with Philadelphia as a free agent.

“I have a little more to my game, I believe, especially mentally,” Bailey said on the Saints’ official website. “I can see things a lot easier, a lot of things come up that I’ve had experience with. That only helps your game. I’m using that to my advantage as much as possible because I know how much you’ve got to be mentally ready for this, as well as physically ready.

“I just like the situation I’m going into because I know these guys are going to be hungry.”

New Orleans also may lose safety Rafael Bush, an unrestricted free agent who on Thursday signed an offer sheet from the Atlanta Falcons. New Orleans has until April 8 to match that offer and keep Bush, but the Saints have been operating with minimal salary cap space, which will only be squeezed further by bringing in Bailey.

A versatile player who saw action on offense, defense and special teams at Georgia, Bailey was drafted with the seventh overall pick in 1999 by Washington. He was dealt to Denver in 2004 for running back Clinton Portis.
