Letter: What True Science Looks Like

To the Editor:

Thanks to Michael Hillinger, chairman of the Upper Valley chapter of the Sierra Club, for his letter in the Sept. 7 Forum replying to my letter about global warming; I’m glad I drew blood. As some may recall, my letter attacked bogus climate science by presenting some easily verifiable facts. Hillinger then proceeded to “refute” these facts by reiterating the same bogus claims I was complaining about. That might work for low-information members of the Sierra Club, but I’m afraid it doesn’t really constitute a refutation.

Anyway, I am fully aware of the radical political aims of the Sierra Club, aims that I do not share, so I won’t be attending its meetings. Even though I suspect that Hillinger is not all that interested in science, in the unlikely event that he may wish to learn about the real world, may I draw his attention to the very interesting website — wattsupwiththat.com. There he will learn what true science looks like when it doesn’t have a political agenda and has nothing to hide.

Letter: Moving Beyond Pseudoscience

Thursday, August 29, 2013

To the Editor: In his Aug. 29 letter, Barrie Sellers makes clear that he thinks that the research of climate scientists is “bogus.” As evidence he offers a series of talking points familiar to those who follow the pseudoscience of climate change denial. The things he believes people “know” are demonstrably false. The Earth is indeed warming, and we can …

Letter: Enough Bogus Climate Science

Thursday, August 8, 2013

To the Editor: Regarding the Bloomberg News of Aug. 5, “Turning the Tables: The Climate Exacts its Revenge”: In a farrago of ridiculously precise statistics, the claim is made that failing to act now on reducing carbon dioxide emissions will result in 2.5 percent more personal violence and 24 percent more intergroup conflict because tempers flare as the temperatures rise. …

Editorial: Turning the Tables; The Climate Exacts Its Revenge

Friday, August 2, 2013

Earth’s atmosphere seems to have found a way to get back at the human race. For almost three centuries, we have been filling the air with carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases. Now, the climate change these emissions have wrought is turning people against one another. So says a review, published this week, of 60 studies on how climate …

Letter: What’s Known About Climate Change

Friday, September 27, 2013

To the Editor: Barrie Sellers wants us to know “what true science looks like” in his response to my critique of his claim that climate science is “bogus.” His original letter listed things that people “know.” They “know that the sea is alkaline and not becoming more acidic.” They “know that the rate of sea level rise is less than …
