Letter: State Goofs; Others Pay the Price
To the Editor:
Here we go again, downshifting more cost to the cities and towns in the guise of a goof. A key state office, the Department of Education, despite having professional and knowledgeable people on its staff, commits a $3.4 million dollar goof and then expects the towns and cities of 79 school districts to make up the difference. Mistakes such as this one are inexcusable and should not be just shrugged off as a minuscule error by Concord. In short, the state should apologize, then make up the difference somewhere — and that should be from the Department of Education and the legislative office budgets for our representatives. It is horribly unfair to penalize cities and towns for an error committed by a government bureau and legislators who enacted a law with unclear language.
