Letter: Not a Winnable Case

To the Editor:

How is it that a case such as Parker Gilbert’s ever arrived in court? Were the facts really as obvious and one-sided as your reporting made them appear? You carefully detailed reasons cited for acquittal. But what were the reasons — the facts — that led not only the accuser but also the Grafton County prosecuting attorney Lara Saffo and the advocacy group WISE to believe the case was winnable? How about writing a story that examines that?

There is no question that the trial’s outcome will chill the willingness of victims of sexual assault to seek justice in court. And your stories, which implied that the prosecution’s case was without merit, didn’t help matters, either.
