Donna L. “Rara” Blashill

Hammond, Ind. — Donna L. “Rara” Blashill nee Lyons, age 68, US Army Captain of the Vietnam War, of Hammond, passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013.

Cherished wife for 43 years to Ron Blashill.

Loving mother of Sean (Barb) Blashill, Kristi Blashill, and Heather (Wayne) Kabrud.

Beloved sister of Linda (Larry) Leonard and the late Donald (Norma) Lyons.

Proud Rara of Carter Blashill, Kennedy Blashill, and Anna Kabrud.

Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Devoted daughter of the late Ralph “Don” and the late Nancie Lyons.

Donna was born and raised in Lebanon, N.H., and was a 1963 graduate of Lebanon High School. In 1967, she graduated from Faulkner School of Nursing in Boston. She joined the army soon after and spent a year in Vietnam and afterward she was stationed in Landstuhl, Germany, where she caught the best catch of her life, her loving husband, Ron, of 43 years. After the birth of their son Sean in Germany, they returned home to Hammond, where they built a fantastic life. Ron and Donna built their home together, which she decorated with handmade curtains, beddings, and clothing for the children. They had two more girls, Kristi and Heather. She was a scorekeeper for Edison Little League for her children’s games. Donna was an avid fisherwoman and enjoyed her second home at Pine Beach Resort in LaPorte, Minn. She enjoyed traveling back east to visit with her family. Donna was very ingenious with crafts; if it was made of cloth, string, or yarn, she could create it. Donna particularly loved decorating for every holiday especially Christmas. She would put up seven Christmas Trees each year throughout the house. She was an RN for 46 years. She worked for several years with Munster Med Inn and spent the last 10 years of her career with Hospice of the Calumet Area which was her true calling and a job she loved.

She was a very special Rara to three grandchildren, Carter, Kennedy, and Anna. She loved playing children’s games and crafting with the kids. Special thanks go out to the St. Catherine Hospital Staff for all their kindness shown to Donna and her family. She was loved by many and will be missed by more.
