Born April 3, 1923, Jean grew up in Barberton, Ohio and was valedictorian of her high school class of 1940. She graduated from Oberlin College with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1944 and a master’s degree in mathematics in 1947, followed by graduate work at Purdue University and the University of Michigan. Jean then taught math at Berea College for three years, an experience which shaped an early interest in educational opportunities for underserved areas. This led her to Haverford College in 1950, where she completed a master’s degree in social and technical assistance. At Haverford, she met her lifelong love, Brinton (Buzz) Whitall and they married September 23, 1952.

Jean was a 30 year resident of Princeton, N.J. In addition to raising a family, Jean taught math at Princeton Day School, was a research statistician in demography at Princeton University, and prepared taxes for local non-profits and seniors. Upon retirement, Jean devoted herself to helping found Princeton Friends School and served as its treasurer from 1986 to 1991. In later life, Jean and Buzz built a home in Greensboro, Vt. and spent part of each year there, where Jean was active on the board of the Greensboro Land Trust. Jean and Buzz moved to Hanover in 1993, and to Kendal at Hanover in 2002.

In addition to being with her family, Jean’s greatest loves included listening to classical music, enjoying the natural beauty of northern Michigan and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, walking in the woods with a dog by her side, and having a heart to heart conversation with a good friend.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Ann Whitall and husband, John Guimond, her daughter, Ruth Whitall and her husband, Tom Hopkins; and her four grandchildren, Evan, Ella, Sarah, and Hannah. She is predeceased by her husband, Buzz, who died May 28, 2013.
