Joan (Concannon) Mannix
Grantham, N.H. — Joan (Concannon) Mannix, 91, of Troon Drive in Grantham, N.H., died on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at her home in Eastman, N.H., surrounded by her family. Joan was born in Milwaukee, Wis., to Helen (Hurley) and Leo J. Concannon. A graduate of Newton High School, she continued her education at Immaculata College in Washington D.C. She entered the nursing program at Mass General Hospital, until she was one of twelve women selected for an aeronautical engineering program at NYU. Independently, she also obtained her pilot’s license. After WWII, she married William J. Mannix and raised eight children. They enjoyed 51 years before he passed in 2000.
They lived in West Newton, Mass., and were members of Woodland Golf Club and were parishioners at St Bernard’s Parish. Joan, a talented seamstress, started her own line of raingear for golfers. Joan and Bill moved to Grantham in 1990, where Joan was an active golfer and community member. She loved to sing in the choir at their parish Our Lady of Fatima. She enjoyed living “in the woods”. A woman who loved to be busy, she spent her later years painting, sketching and writing children’s books.
Joan is predeceased by her brother, Edward; and survived by her sister, Nancy Concannon. She is also survived by her eight children, Michael Mannix and his wife, Leslie, of Brookline, Mass., Mark Mannix, of Madison, Conn., Maureen Winkler and her husband, Greg, of Centerville, Mass., Jim Mannix and his wife, Meg, of Edina, Minn., Marilyn Hailer and her husband, Rob, of Siasconset, Mass., Joanie Burke, of Centerville, Tommy Mannix, of Norton, Mass., and Dede Mannix, of Portland, Ore. Also her fourteen grandchildren, Sean, Todd and his wife, Krise, Bailey, Brandon, Ryan, Kyle, Cullen, Corinne, Conor, Emily, Bobby, Tyler, Maggie, and Zach; along with three great grandchildren; and a great, great grandchild.
Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St, New London, on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, from 9 a.m to 10:30 a.m., with a funeral service following at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church 724 Main St, New London, N.H.
