Letter: Key Drawback to the Property Tax
To the Editor:
The writer defending the property tax in the Dec. 1 Forum (“Advantages of the Property Tax”) ignored an enormously important fact. Namely, the property tax (overlooking the huge cost of administration) is outrageously regressive. Studies over the years uniformly demonstrate that the tax takes 1 percent or less of the income of the very, very wealthy, 1 1/2 or 2 percent of the income of the wealthy, and up to 10 percent or more of the income of families with modest incomes.
