Letter: Unhelpful Commentary

To the Editor:

In reference to Tim Bowen’s May 7 letter “Why So Many Applicants?”: How disheartening to read an ostrich-like commentary about well-established concerns. Dartmouth itself reports that applications are down 14 percent, and that the attendant publicity regarding its problems will not help. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to see how the school can establish a more egalitarian approach to gender equality and emphasize the advantages of being able to hear students say “no” to unwanted sexual advances?

It’s difficult to understand why some former Dartmouth grads are unable to see that correcting problems can make things better and that ignoring them can only mean more of the same unpleasant criticism that the letter suggests we ignore.
