Father Leo P. Maxfield, M.S.

Enfield, N.H. — Father Leo P. Maxfield, M.S., a member of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Genesis Nursing Home in Lebanon, N.H. Father Maxfield was born on May 31, 1929, in Leominster, Mass., son of the late Arthur and Marie-Antoinette (Boisvert) Maxfield. After attending schools in Leominster, he studied at the La Salette High School Seminary in Enfield, N.H. He began his novitiate on July 1, 1949, in East Brewster, Mass. and made First Profession of vows on July 2, 1950 in East Brewster. After completing his studies, Father Maxfield was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1955 in Fall River, Mass. by Bishop Connolly.

In 1956, Father Maxfield was appointed Business Manager of Celle Qui Pleure, a religious magazine published by the La Salette Province in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Over the years Father served the La Salette community in many capacities. He taught in the seminary, assisted in the vocation program and the mission office. For 20 years he served at the La Salette mission in Spain. In 1988, he was named Associate Pastor at Our Lady of La Salette Parish in Montreal, Canada. For many years he served at the La Salette Shrines in Attleboro and Enfield and was a member of the La Salette Shrine Community in Enfield until his death.

He was predeceased by brothers Eugene, Richard, and Edgar and his sister Irene.

In addition to his La Salette confreres, Father Maxfield is survived by four brothers: Charles, Gerard, Raymond, and Ronald; and five sisters: Claire White, Evelyn Byrd, Lorraine Duval, Jeanne Litterio, and Anne Marie Maxfield.

Services for Father Maxfield will be held at the La Salette Shrine Chapel, in Enfield on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m. Viewing will be held preceding the Funeral Mass from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow in the Shrine Cafeteria following the funeral services. Burial at the La Salette Cemetery in Enfield will take place in the spring.
