Robert S. Champagne

Vero Beach, Fla. — Robert S. Champagne, 80, died on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Hospice House in Vero Beach. The cause of death was cancer.

Born in Hartford in 1932 to the late Adelarde and Phyllis (Gregoire) Champagne, the second of four sons. He was raised in the Park Street section of Hartford. He graduated from Hartford Public High School, the University of Connecticut and the Hartford Graduate Center (Rensselaer). He worked for 40 years for Aetna Life & Casualty, retiring as Assistant Vice President responsible for Aetna’s Medicare programs. While at Aetna he was the recipient of the Superior Achievement Award by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for fraud and abuse detection programs in health care.

During the Korean War he served in Korea with the 40th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He resided, over time, in Hartford, West Hartford, Conn., Vero Beach, and Grantham, N.H.

His community activities included service as chairman of the Parish Council, at the Church of St. Helena, West Hartford, Conn.; president of Grove Isle Condominium Association, Vero Beach; Town Building Committee, the Historical Society and the Grantham Democratic Party, all in N.H.

He enjoyed his family, his friends, feeding the birds, reading, sports, especially those involving the University of Connecticut and extending a helping hand to one in need.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Catherine Hickson Champagne; his son, Andrew Damian Champagne of Burlington, Vt. and daughter, Alison Claire Champagne of Cardiff, Wales, U.K.; his brothers, A. Donald Champagne and his wife, Yvette of Coventry, Conn. and Vero Beach, Ronald Champagne of South Windsor, Conn. He was predeceased by his brother, Phillip Champagne of Warren, Maine and his sister-in-law, Geraldine Champagne of South Windsor. He leaves many nieces and nephews and many long-time, loyal friends.

Bob will always be remembered for his generous heart, thoughtfulness, integrity, warmth and courage. He was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Arrangements are by All County Funeral Home & Crematory. An on-line guest book is available at www.allcounty.com
