NECBL Team Capsules

Northern Division

Keene Swamp Bats

Last Season: 13-29, last in Northern Division. Missed playoffs.

Home Field: Alumni Field, Keene, N.H.

First Year in NECBL: 1998

GM: Kevin Watterson

Manager: Jim Negrych (1)

Twitter: @KeeneSwampBats

Outlook: The Swamp Bats will try and bounce back after tying for the league’s worst record with Danbury, 13-29. Jim Negrych, a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh, was named the team’s eighth manager in March, replacing Dan Moylan, Keene High’s baseball coach, after three seasons. Lucas Luopa, a Keene-native from Eckerd College, returns to lead the offense one year after team-highs 13 stolen bases and 20 runs.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats

Last Season: 21-21, fourth in Northern Division. Missed playoffs.

Home Field: Robbie Mills Memorial Sports Complex, Laconia, N.H.

First Year in NECBL: 2010

GM: Kristian Svindland

Manager: Bill Clay (1)

Twitter: @MuskratBaseball

Outlook: The Muskrats will move forward into a new era with a new identity and a new general manager, as Laconia businessman Kristian Svindland takes over for Nighthawks’ Noah Crane. Last season, Laconia jumped out to a fast start before skidding into the postseason suffering from injuries. Svindland said he hopes the new regional name will help reach a broader audience.

Vermont Mountaineers

Last Season: 25-16, first in Northern Division. Won 2015 NECBL championship.

Home Field: Montpelier Recreation Field, Montpelier, Vt.

First Year in NECBL: 2003

GM: Brian Gallagher

Manager: Joe Brown (4)

Twitter: @MountaineersVT

Outlook: The Mountaineers finished second behind Newport for the league’s best record, and found their rhythm late to win Vermont’s third NECBL championship in nine years. Pitching trio Sean Callahan, UMass-Dartmouth, Joe Rocchetti, Manhatten College, and Ty Wiest, Columbia, all return to this season’s Vermont squad, along with fourth-year head coach Joe Brown.

Sanford Mainers

Last Season: 23-18, second in Northern Division. Lost to North Adams in quarterfinals.

Home Field: Goodall Park, Sanford, Maine

First Year in NECBL: 2002

GM: Aaron Izaryk

Manager: Aaron Izaryk (8)

Twitter: @SanfordMainers

Outlook: The Mainers finished second in the Northern Division falling to streaking North Adams in the first round of the NECBL playoffs. Sanford will feature Chicago Cubs short stop prospect John Cresto and Bryant Unviersity’s Brandon Bingel in his second season with the team. Bingel was 7-2 on the mound last season and added seven home runs in 45 games at the plate.

Valley Blue Sox

Last Season: 19-23, fifth in Northern Division. Missed playoffs.

Home Field: MacKenzie Stadium, Holyoke, Mass.

First Year in NECBL: 2004

GM: Hunter Golden

Manager: John Raiola (2)

Twitter: @HolyokeBlueSox

The Blue Sox will feature a trio from the University of Texas this summer, including Texas Rangers pick Travis Jones and freshman reliever Blake Wellmann.

North Adams SteepleCats

Last Season: 21-21, third in North Division. Lost to Vermont 2-1 in semifinals.

Home Field: Joe Wolfe Field, North Adams, Mass.

First Year in NECBL: 2002

GM: Jonah Bayliss

Manager: Mike Armstrong (2)

Twitter: @SteepleCats

Outlook: Amhert College’s Mike Armstrong takes over what was the NECBL’s hottest postseason team last season, finishing the regular season at .500 before upsetting second-ranked Sanford and taking the eventual champion Mountaineers to the brink. North Adams will feature Dartmouth junior infielder Dustin Shirley, a Los Angeles native, this season.

Southern Division

Danbury Westerners

Last Season: 13-29, last in Southern Division. Missed playoffs.

Home Field: Rogers Park, Danbury Conn.

First Year in NECBL: 1995

GM: Jon Pitser

Manager: Josh Parrow (1)

Twitter: @DanbWesterners

Outlook: The NECBL’s oldest franchise will try and find its rhythm after finishing the 2015 season tied for the league’s worst record. Danbury gave up a league-high 269 runs, 207 earned, last season, and recorded a league-low 215 strikeouts. University of Miami’s Jesse Lepore will be Danbury’s featured pitcher in Josh Parrow’s first season at the helm. Parrow was the Westerner’s pitching coach last year.

Mystic Schooners

Last Season: 26-16, second in Southern Division. Lost to Vermont in NECBL championship series.

Home Field: Robert E. Fitch High School, Groton, Conn.

First Year in NECBL: 2011

GM: Dennis Long

Manager: Phil Orbe (5)

Twitter: @MysticSchooners

Outlook: Phil Orbe, one of the NECBL’s longest tenured coaches, took Mystic to the league’s championship series before falling to Vermont in three games, led by the league’s best pitching tandem allowing a league-low 138 runs and recorded a league-high 336 strikeouts. Oklahoma State junior Tyler Buffett, 44.1 innings pitched and 32 strikeouts, and University of Rhode Island outfielder Martin Figueroa will star on the mound for the Schooners.

Plymouth Pilgrims

Last Season: 20-22, fifth in Southern Division. Missed playoffs.

Home Field: Forges Field, Plymouth, Mass.

First Year in NECBL: 2013

GM: Ben Fey

Manager: Greg Zackrison (4)

Twitter: @PilgrimBaseball

Outlook: Plymouth had some of the league’s best young hitters last season in Mississippi State’s Brent Rooker, the NECBL’s most valuable player, and Eastern Kentucky’s Mandy Alvarez, but couldn’t put it all together down the stretch. The Pilgrims gave up 215 runs, 171 earned last season, second only to league-worst Danbury, and finished on a 2-8 slide. Plymouth added Bridgewater, Mass. native Jack Connolly, a curve ball specialist at Notre Dame, to its rotation this season.

Newport Gulls

Last Season: 27-15, first in Southern Division. Lost in two games to Mystic in semfinals.

Home Field: Cardines Field, Newport, R.I.

GM: Chuck Paiva

Manager: Al Leyva (1)

Twitter: @NewportGulls

Outlook: Newport has been the NECBL’s most consistently strong team, holding a league-leading six championships dating back to its inception in 2001. The Gulls will feature four MLB draft picks this season, including Boston pitching choices Bradley Wilpon, of UPenn, and Derik Beauprez, of Nova Southeastern. Pitchers Hunter Schryver, of Villanova, and Wilpon are scheduled to be the Gulls’ aces this season.

Ocean State Waves

Last Season: 21-21, fourth in Southern Division. Lost to Newport in quarterfinals.

Home Field: Old Mountain Field, South Kingstown, R.I.

First Year in NECBL: 2013

GM: Matt Finlayson

Manager: James Sauro (1)

Twitter: @OceanStateWaves

Outlook: Former Waves coach Eric Cirella, head coach at Salve Regina in the spring, steps back to associate head coach while South Kingstown High head coach James Sauro takes over the coaching staff. Ocean State will feature three players, two pitchers and a catcher, from Boston College, as well as Milwaukee 16th round pick Ben Onyshko, a pitcher from Stetson University. Ryan Blanton, a Georgia State product, returns for his third consecutive summer after earning an NECBL All-Star spot last season.

New Bedford Bay Sox

Last Season: 22-20, third in Southern Division. Missed playoffs.

Home Field: Paul Walsh Field, New Bedford, Mass.

First Year in NECBL: 2007

GM: Tammy Silveira

Manager: Kyle Fernandes (2)

Twitter: @BaySoxBaseball

Outlook: The Bay Sox will have to find a new source for offense as Sacred Heart’s Jayson Sullivan, who batted .324 last season, and Millersville’s Tyler Orris, with 37 hits and 17 RBIs, will not return this season. Former Red Sox Kyle Fernandes, who spent seven years in the pros, takes over as head coach for New Bedford.
