EAST THETFORD, VT — Martha “Marty” Venable Hoffman Vaughan, 68, died Saturday, February 9, 2019 at home, following a long illness. Martha was born September 29, 1950 in Elmira, NY, daughter of Edward Kistler and Jean (Richards) Hoffman. She graduated from the Elmira Free Academy, class of 1968 and continued her education at Vermont College in Montpelier. After obtaining her associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education Martha worked with children in Elmira and Boulder, CO; then traveled to Europe, working as an au pair in Germany. While visiting a brother living in Thetford, Marty took a job working as a lifeguard at Treasure Island on Lake Fairlee and this is where she met future husband Roger Vaughan; They married February 23, 1974 in Elmira. Making their home on the Vaughan family dairy farm in East Thetford, Martha was a homemaker, raising two children. She also worked part time as a seamstress at Serry’s Clothiers in Hanover, as a secretary at Pearce Jewelers in Lyme, and worked part time in foodservice at Thetford Academy -while her children were in school there. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in White River Junction, VT for many years. Martha was a talented seamstress who loved making and altering garments, she made numerous quilts, enjoyed knitting and in earlier years she enjoyed working in the gardens and canned the fruits and vegetables coming out of them. She would often gather up the children and bring them up to the family farm to help with the chores. Every summer Marty traveled back to the family cottage on Seneca Lake in upstate New York where she was known for leaving unexpected, mysterious little gifts for people - an interesting rock from the beach, an old photograph she had rediscovered, or a handful of wild black raspberries. She was predeceased by her husband Roger, who died in his sleep last July. Martha is survived by son Eli Vaughan of Willits, CA; daughter Victoria Vaughan of East Thetford; four brothers Edward “Chip” K. Hoffman, Jr. of Ithaca, NY, John “Rick” R. Hoffman of East Thetford, VT, Thomas “Terry” E. Hoffman of Elkins, WV and Daniel S. Hoffman of Santander, Spain; her sister Mary “Molly” Hoffman Personius of San Diego, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. Services are being planned for this spring in Vermont and summer in upstate New York. Condolences may be expressed in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
