Local roundup: Healthy again, Thetford girls tip Montpelier

THETFORD — Good health comes with rewards, as the Thetford Academy girls basketball team knows. The Panthers enjoyed just their second game all season with a full roster healthy and available, and the results showed in a 72-37 victory over visiting Montpelier on Tuesday night.

Whitney Lewis helped set the tone on both ends with 13 points and 13 rebounds for Thetford. Charlize Brown added 12 points along with four assists and four steals. Madi Mousley had 10 points and dished out five assists. Kelsey Bogie tied for the team-lead with 13 points.

“We put together three solid quarters tonight. We shot the ball well; starting to see the floor better which leads to more layups. We’re also starting to rebound better, which jump-starts our offense,” Thetford coach Eric Ward said.

The Panthers shot 30-for-55 as a team, a percentage sure to be a recipe for success as Thetford embarks on a busy finish to the season. After a slew of postponements, the Panthers (6-6) play four games this week and another four next week. Up next is a visit to Oxbow on Friday.

CLAREMONT — The Cardinals (12-3) rebounded from a tough loss to Newfound on Monday night to rout the visiting Hillcats.

Junior post player Alyssa Paquette led Stevens with 15 points, and sophomore guard Kiley Bundy added 13. The Cardinals outscored Hillsboro-Deering, 24-3, in the third quarter after a slow offensive start.

“It took us a little while to get it going, but we talked at halftime about using our defense to fuel our offense,” Stevens coach Steve Condon said. “We got a little more aggressive on the boards as well.”

The Cardinals are tied for fourth in the NHIAA Division III standings and close the regular season with a critical game at Monadnock on Friday.

HYDE PARK, Vt. — The Olympians held on in the fourth quarter for a quality road win over the Lancers to each closer to .500 at 7-8.

Oxbow built a seemingly-comfortable 44-26 lead through three quarters only to run out of gas a bit in the fourth as Lamoille rallied to make it a one-possession game late.

Emma Parkin led a trio of double-digit scorers for Oxbow with 20 points. Maggi Ellsworth had 12 points, and Alexa Kosakowski added 11 points.

 The Olympians look to even their record at home against Spaulding on Thursday.

BRANDON, Vt. — Elliot Rupp had 16 points as the Yellowjackets took down the Otters, improving to 14-2 on the season.

Peyton Richardson made three three-pointers to add nine points. Audrey Rupp also had nine. Karen Kapuscinski had seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Reese Perry pulled down 20 rebounds to help the Jacks control the boards.

Windsor visits Fair Haven on Friday night.

NEW IPSWICH, N.H. — The Royals opened the game on a 12-3 run and kept the momentum from there to beat Mascenic.

Gabby Pierce had 16 points to lead a balanced Mascoma attack. Madisun LaCasse added nine points, Kylie Rogers had seven and Liberti LaCasse and Emily Seiler had six each.

The Royals (4-8) hosts Fall Mountain on Wednesday.

QUECHEE — The Eagles enjoyed a balanced offensive attack in a dominant win over the Mounties.

Hayley Goodwin led the way as usual, scoring 25 points. Rachel Horner-Richardson and Alyssa Roberts each added eight points for the Eagles, while Skye Whitcomb and Sarah Bascom added six points each.

“More than half of our points came off assists, which is something we haven’t done all year,” MVCS Chris Goodwin said. “Our man-to-man defense was solid, and we had some good balance on offense. That usually adds up to a successful night for us.”

The Eagles (9-6) host Proctor on Wednesday.

RUTLAND — The hosts opened the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back to drop Hartford to 7-7.

Emily Wright had 11 points to pace the Canes. Madison Withington added eight points and Elsie Davis had six.

Hartford is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Woodstock.

Boys BasketballLebanon 50, Oyster River 41

LEBANON — Braeden Falzarano scored 26 points to lead the No. 4 seed Raiders past the No. 13 seed Bobcats in the first round of the NHIAA Division II playoffs.

The senior guard was complemented by 14 points from senior forward Jackson Stone. Lebanon (16-3) advanced despite not making a single three-pointer. The hosts trailed after the first quarter but outscored Oyster River, 17-4, in the second.

The Raiders now move on to the quarterfinals, where they will host No. 5 seed Pembroke on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. The Spartans defeated Lebanon by six in the season opener back in December, after which the Raiders ran off 15 straight victories.

QUECHEE — Joel Roberts set a MVCS program record with 40 points in the Eagles’ blowout victory.

“We forced turnovers and jumped out to an early lead. Both teams played fast. We rebounded well but probably turned the ball over more than I would’ve liked,” MVCS coach Erva Barnes said.

Abel Goodwin added 25 points. Roman Goeppner had 22. The Eagles (10-6) host Proctor on Wednesday.

LANGDON, N.H. — The Cardinals (8-5) continued a very busy week with a quality road win over the Wildcats.

Kayden LaClair led Stevens with 14 points. The Cardinals built a 39-24 lead at halftime and cruised to the win after the break. Reeve Wilkinson and Cooper Moote each drained a pair of 3-pointers on their way to 12 points apiece.

The win comes on the second day of five straight with games for Stevens. The Cardinals visit InterLakes on Wednesday before hosting Newport and Monadnock to close out the week on Thursday and Friday.

WrestlingWinnisquam 39, Mascoma 27

WEST CANAAN — The Royals picked up three wins via pin in a hard-fought match against the Bears.

Hunter Zarr (120 pounds), Asa Michetti (160) and Owen McKinney (220) all won with pins for Mascoma. Tyler Mekus (170 pounds) lost, but avoided being pinned and lost on points. The Royals also picked up three wins via forfeit.
