Linda Tuck touches up a gnome she carved with a chainsaw for her grandson at her home in White River Junction, Vt., on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023. When her family moved to the house in 2016, a number of spruce trees were in bad shape and needed to be cut down. It was her first time using a chainsaw. "If you don't try, you never know" she said. Now, leaving 12-foot stumps behind, Tuck has carved three gnomes for her four grandsons, with one more to go. She was repainting this gnome due to insect and woodpecker damage.
