Norwich, Vt. — William F. Greenwood, Bill, 93, formerly of Beacon Woods, Hudson, Fla. and Staten Island, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan 8, 2018, after many years of bravely battling Parkinson’s disease. He resided in Norwich, with his daughter, Susan Greenwood.

Bill was a loving and dedicated husband and father. He and his wife Veronica (Ronnie) enjoyed 30 years of retirement and 65 years of marriage until Ronnie’s passing in 2011.

He retired from the New York Telephone Company after 30-plus years of working in Brooklyn and Staten Island, N.Y.

Bill was in the U.S. Navy and received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the vicinity of Samar Island, Philippines, Oct. 25, 1944, while on U.S. Naval ship USS Heermann.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan E. Greenwood; and son, Jeffry J. Greenwood; and sisters, Jane Gilligan, Peggy Kiernan, and Dorothy Balzer.

One of the finest examples of the Greatest Generation, Bill has touched countless lives and is loved by all who knew him, always an example of positivity, with a strong work and life ethic.

He and Ronnie ran a community garden; he repaired all of the neighbors’ appliances and electrical wiring; and he gave all the kids on the block haircuts – and a snow cone when finished; all they had to do was choose the flavor. Anything he could do to help, he did happily, and never accepted a penny in return.

In addition to his many home-repair and building projects, Bill created a workshop for his boundless creative endeavors. His folk art today, made with anything from wood to tin cans to slates, and all expertly painted, decorates the landscapes, walls, and Christmas trees of countless lucky recipients. These he gave generously, with much love.

Bill will be remembered for his kindness and encouragement, his consistent eagerness to provide support or a helping hand, his sweet sense of humor, and for his prolific creativity. The world will truly miss him.

Bill will be buried beside his wife Ronnie, with an honors ceremony at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made under Bill Greenwood’s tribute number #11194473 either by phone 800-822-6344 or mail to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
