Ascutney — A local nonprofit that pairs people age 55 and older with local volunteer opportunities honored its members recently with lunch and length-of-service awards.

Green Mountain RSVP’s annual appreciation event, at Exit Ate in Ascutney, was held on April 27, to coincide with this year’s National Volunteer week, April 23-29. The week’s theme, Service Unites, “captures the power of change makers to come together to build stronger, more vibrant communities through service,” according to a news release from the Ascutney-based nonprofit.

Those honored included Sally Harris, of Weathersfield, who has volunteered with the town’s Proctor Library for 15 years.

Bridgewater Corners resident Althea Derstin has been a Bone Builder instructor at Thompson Senior Center in Woodstock for 10 years.

Ron Young, of Reading, Vt., marked five years of service as a Meals on Wheels driver and a support person at Springfield (Vt.) Hospital.

Maria Contro, treasurer of the board of directors for Meals on Wheels of Greater Springfield, Vt., earned the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Chester, Vt., resident has logged more than 20,000 hours of service since joining RSVP in 1995.

In the past 12 months, first-year volunteer Jacqueline Langeveld, of Chester, logged more than 1,000 hours with Meals on Wheels of Greater Springfield, Springfield Area Parent Child Center and Springfield Hospital.

On Thursday, Green Mountain RSVP will mark older Americans Month with a picnic for its volunteers and their friends and family members. The Spinners, a string band from Springfield, will provide music for the noontime event.

A program of Senior Corps, the organization is sponsored by the Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging.
