Lebanon — The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in the Upper Valley to transport cancer patients to their appointments, often at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

The American Cancer Society’s Road To Recovery program pairs drivers with cancer patients who need help getting to and from their many appointments. Volunteers can make their own schedule and commit as many or as few hours as they like. The society is also looking for people to help coordinate the driving schedule for Road to Recovery.

For more than 12,000 New Hampshire and Vermont residents who will battle cancer this year, transportation to appointments can be a major source of stress.

“One cancer patient requiring radiation therapy could need between 20 to 30 trips to treatment over the course of six weeks,” said Katy Nowoswiat, program manager for the American Cancer Society. “A patient receiving chemotherapy may need weekly treatment for up to a year.”

Volunteers must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. They use their own vehicle to drive patients. The society provides background checks and training, although Nowoswiat said no special skills are required.

“The most valuable skills you can bring to any volunteer effort are compassion, an open mind, a

willingness to do whatever is needed,” she said, adding that even a few hours of volunteering can be a rewarding.

“Volunteering doesn’t have to take over your life to be a valuable experience.”
