Claremont — On Friday evening, REMIX, the Pleasant Street coffee bar and social club, will hold a fundraiser to assist an area family that is struggling with a number of challenges.

Many in Claremont know Nick Coombs, a young man with special needs who requires 24/7 care. His mother, Janette, is battling breast cancer and her chemotherapy and other treatments have made it difficult for the family to provide the care Nick needs.

“The biggest thing is getting help to care for Nick on the evenings and weekends when we don’t have the extra help,” Janette Coombs said in an email. “Needless to say, this has been very challenging.”

Jim Neilsen, founder of REMIX, said the fundraising event is called “Some Antics — An Evening of Improvisational Comedy,” hosted by Chad Blodgett.

All of the evening’s proceeds will go to the Coombs family — Alex, Janette, Kayleigh and Nick — to help cover the cost of care for Nick, Neilsen said.

“We have seen some businesses raise money for the Coombs family, so we decided to step up and help,” Neilsen said. “When it was brought to our attention we said, ‘Absolutely. We’ll do it.’ ”

A $5 donation at the door is requested and seating is limited. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Janette Coombs said she recently completed another round of chemotherapy and has two phases to go before a scheduled mastectomy on July 19. That will be followed by radiation and another surgery.

“Lots of mountains to climb,” said Janette Coombs, who celebrated her completion of chemo with a hike up Mt. Ascutney.

She said the family’s goal is to continue to give both Nick and Kayleigh lives “full of adventure” while she undergoes treatment.

Coombs said she plans to attend Friday’s event with Nick, 24.

REMIX can be contacted on Facebook or online at www.livethatremixedlife.org with any questions.

REMIX is located at 1 Pleasant St., just off Opera House Square.
