The Valley News has been selected to add two journalists — a photojournalist and a climate and environment reporter — to our newsroom through Report for America, a national service program that boosts local news by harnessing community support.

Six-Month Photo Internship

The Valley News is currently accepting applications for a six-month photo internship, running from January through June 2019.

The photo intern works with the newspaper's two staff photographers and photo editor, covering a range of assignments and enterprise work.

An award-winning 13,000 daily morning newspaper on the Vermont/New Hampshire border, the Valley News covers a region that includes 46 towns in four counties; its core area includes Hanover, Lebanon and Claremont, N.H., and White River Junction, Vt. The Valley News is owned by Newspapers of New England, a family-owned publisher of eight dailies and weeklies that also includes the Concord Monitor and the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass.

The intern is treated as an equal in the newsroom. Interns are expected to be out of the office to find stories, as the rest of the photography staff does. This is where community journalism thrives, an invaluable learning experience whether newspapers are in the photographer's future or not. Those who do well are self-starters and have the curiosity to tell stories through the eyes of the area's residents. Photographers also produce long-term projects.

The pay is $480 per week, plus overtime when applicable. Mileage is also reimbursed. In addition to having an insured car, the intern must provide his/her own camera and basic lenses, which the Valley News insures. The newspaper will also cover necessary job-related repairs to the camera and lenses. The newspaper also has pool lighting equipment, Nikon cameras and a sports lens.
