BRADFORD — A 33-year-old man was arrested and charged on Thursday after he allegedly stabbed a man with whom he shared a residence near downtown Bradford in what the victim described as an unprovoked altercation.

Travis Guyette, of 64 Pleasant Street, has been charged with aggravated assault, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, after he allegedly walked down the stairs of the apartment that he shared with a 48-year-old victim and the victim’s 46-year-old girlfriend brandishing a knife with a 3-inch blade, according to Vermont State Police.

It was around 6 a.m. in morning and Guyette started accusing the victim of “putting metal shavings” in his food, police said.

A physical altercation ensued, according to an affidavit prepared by the arresting trooper in support of the charges. After noticing his clothes were “drenched in blood,” the victim called for a ride to take him to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vt., where he was treated and released later on Thursday.

The victim told police that he believed Guyette was “experiencing hallucinations” when he came down the stairs with the knife, the affidavit said.

After the alleged altercation, the owner of the apartment told police that he went to Guyette’s room and advised him that he should surrender himself to police, but Guyette offered a “negative” response.

Troopers said when they showed up at the residence at 7:30 p.m. to investigate the alleged assault, Guyette was “verbally resistant” when questioned and denied the allegation he had stabbed the man earlier that morning.

Then when the officers moved to arrest and handcuff Guyette, he tried “pulling his arms away,” which led the officers to force him to the ground “in a prone position,” according to the affidavit.

Guyette also was uncooperative when officers tried to escort him into the police cruiser, police said. He was transported to Bradford for processing.

Guyette appeared for arraignment on Friday afternoon in Orange County Superior Court in Chelsea, where he entered a not guilty plea. The judge ordered a $10,000 cash or surety secured appearance bond along with conditions of release, according to the court clerk’s office.
