ROYALTON — Royalton Hill Bridge, also known as Foxstand Bridge, is anticipated to remain closed at least through the remainder of the year, according to the town administrator.
The bridge, which spans the White River between Royalton Hill Road and Route 14, was deemed unsafe by the Vermont Agency of Transportation following a safety inspection in early April.
A meeting between Royalton and VTrans officials earlier this week made it clear that even if the town were to spend upwards of $750,000 on repairs, the bridge could only sustain passenger vehicles and wouldn’t be restored to its original load-bearing capacity, according to a Wednesday post from Town Administrator Victoria Paquin on the town website.
Plus, its reopening likely wouldn’t occur until next year.
The long-term repairs for the bridge are being funded by the Federal Highway Administration, and it’s “possible that the installation of the temporary bridge may also be funded by Federal Highway dollars,” Paquin wrote. However, a temporary bridge also wouldn’t likely be constructed until next year.
For the time being, she added, residents should plan for the bridge to remain closed.
